Mythology
The scorpion sent by Gaia (or Artemis) to kill Orion. Antares — 'rival of Mars' — is a red supergiant so large it would engulf Mars if placed at the Sun's position. In Polynesian lore, the scorpion is instead the fish-hook of the demigod Maui.
